Born in Montreal, Canada, Caroline Planté began her musical studies (flamenco guitar and piano) at 7 years old. Her father, guitarist Marcel Planté 'El Rubio', passed on his musical knowledge and his love of flamenco music.
She was awarded many bursaries both by the Arts Council of Canada and Arts and Letter Council of Quebec and later perfected her skills in Spain (Sevilla and Madrid) with several master guitarists, singers and dancers. She is one of the rare women to play flamenco guitar. Caroline progressively carved herself a place of choice in this discipline where men are predominant.
With over 20 years of experience as a composer and guitarist, she participated in the elaboration, composition and interpretation of several important productions in Canada, U.S.A and Spain.
Musical director of Cruceta Flamenco (Madrid, Spain) from 2005 to 2013, she composed and directed the music for the company's last six productions:Othello (2005), En Rojo (2006), Invernadero-8reflexiones (2009), La Confidencia (2011) , La Diosa Impura (2012) and bpm_danza (2013). These shows were presented at some of the most prestigious festivals in Spain, in Canada and in the USA.
Her first album 8REFLEXIONES features flamenco singer Duquende (Paco de Lucia’s singer) and Rafael Jiménez Falo, dancer Mariano Cruceta and hip-hop singer Say. Recorded in Madrid at the mythical recording studio Musigrama, 8REFLEXIONES is the first flamenco album entirely composed and interpreted by a female guitarist and was chosen as one of the 5 best world music albums of 2010 by Le Devoir. It’s a production by Paco Ortega (Niña Pastori, Diego El Cigala, Camarón etc.), Mariano Cruceta and Caroline Planté under the label El Pescador de Estrellas.
Since 2012, she is the codirector and artistic director of the Festival Flamenco Montréal. Along with the director and founder of the festival, Benoit Bigham, she entered a new venture to promote the continued growth and development of the art of flamenco in her native city where the enthusiasm for flamenco has continued to flourish since it first appeared in the sixties.
After spending 10 years in Spain, she is now back in Montreal where she started her own project, SELLO with which she’s been touring. She also continues to collaborate and tour with the Canadian company La Otra Orilla and composed the music for their works El12 (2009), Unplugged (2014) and Moi&lesAutres (2015).
She is currently working on her second album, which will be released in 2018.
